Trip Highlights

What to expect on this trip

Six days from Arusha through Tarangire, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, ending at Lake Eyasi with the Hadzabe and the Datoga. It is a classic northern circuit safari, with a final morning that almost every other itinerary in Tanzania leaves out entirely.

The Hadzabe are among the last hunter-gatherers on earth, living around Lake Eyasi much as people did before farming began. You go out with them at dawn, on foot, and you listen. It is a meeting, not a performance staged for visitors.

Tarangire's great elephant herds and thousand-year-old baobabs, two nights of big-cat country in the Serengeti's Seronera valley, and black rhino, lion and flamingo on the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater. The Big Five, across three parks that could hardly be more different.

A private 4x4 with a guaranteed window seat and the same professional guide from the first day to the last, staying in mid-range lodges and tented camps. Nothing is shared, no seats are sold on, and the pace is set by the wildlife.

    Day 01

    Arrival in Arusha

You are met on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport and driven to your hotel in Arusha, the town at the foot of Mount Meru where every northern safari begins. The rest of the day is yours to rest after the flight. In the evening your guide will meet you for a full briefing: the route, the parks, what to expect at Lake Eyasi, and the practical things that make a safari run smoothly. Take the chance to ask everything. Dinner and overnight in Arusha.

    Day 02

    Arusha to Tarangire National Park

After breakfast we drive southwest to Tarangire National Park, arriving in time for a picnic lunch. Tarangire is the elephant park, and in the dry season the herds gather in extraordinary numbers along the Tarangire River, moving between baobabs that have stood for over a thousand years. You may also find lion, leopard, giraffe, and the fringe-eared oryx found nowhere else on the northern circuit. A full afternoon of game driving through the river valley follows, before we leave the park. Dinner and overnight near Tarangire.

    Day 03

    Tarangire to the Serengeti

We drive across the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, stopping at the crater rim viewpoint, then descend onto the open plains and enter the Serengeti at Naabi Hill Gate. Picnic lunch at the gate, with a short climb up the kopje for your first sight of plains that genuinely run to the horizon. From there the whole afternoon is a game drive as we travel into the Seronera valley, the heart of the park and its richest big-cat country. Watch the rocks for lion. Dinner and overnight in the central Serengeti.

    Day 04

    Full Day in the Serengeti

A full day in the Serengeti with nowhere else to be. We game drive from first light, when the cats are still active and the light is at its best, working the Seronera river valley and the granite kopjes that punctuate the plains. This is one of the best places in Africa to find leopard, draped in the branches of a sausage tree, and the resident lion prides here are large and habituated to vehicles. Cheetah hunt the open grassland. Picnic lunch in the bush. Dinner and overnight in the central Serengeti.

    Day 05

    Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater

An early game drive as we leave the Serengeti, then we climb back into the Ngorongoro highlands and descend six hundred metres to the crater floor. The Ngorongoro Crater is an intact volcanic caldera holding a dense, resident population of wildlife that never leaves: black rhino, big-maned lion, elephant with heavy tusks, buffalo, and flamingo on the shallow soda lake. Few places let you see so much in so small a space. We climb out in the late afternoon and continue to Karatu. Dinner and overnight in Karatu.

    Day 06

Lake Eyasi, the Hadzabe and Datoga, and Return to Arusha

An early start for Lake Eyasi, where the Hadzabe still live largely as hunter-gatherers, one of the last communities on earth to do so. You join a small group at dawn, when they set out to hunt with bows they make themselves, and you walk with them and listen. Afterwards we visit the neighbouring Datoga, pastoralists and skilled blacksmiths who forge arrowheads from scrap metal at an open fire. This is a morning of meeting people, not watching a performance. We then drive back to Arusha or the airport.

Frequently Asked Questions

Travel Info at glance

What should I wear on a safari day?

Wear lightweight, neutral-colored clothing (like khaki or beige) to stay cool and blend into the environment. Comfortable walking shoes, a hat, and sunglasses are also recommended. Early mornings and evenings can be chilly, so bring a light jacket.

What time do safari game drives usually start and end?

Morning game drives typically start around 6:00 AM and last 3–4 hours, while afternoon or evening drives begin around 3:00–4:00 PM and return by sunset. Exact times may vary depending on the season and your lodge’s schedule.

Is it safe to go on a safari?

Yes, safaris are safe when conducted by professional guides who follow park rules. Always remain in the vehicle unless instructed otherwise and avoid sudden movements or loud noises near wildlife.

Will I see all the Big Five during my safari?

Sightings vary and are never guaranteed as animals roam freely. However, with experienced guides and multiple game drives, your chances of spotting the Big Five—lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo—are high in many national parks.

What should I bring with me on a game drive?

Bring binoculars, a camera, sunscreen, insect repellent, water, and a small snack. Your guide may also provide some of these items, but it’s best to come prepared.
